Inspired by the transition from black-and-white to colour television in the 1970s, it’s an exploration of how humans respond to the emergence of colour from darkness. Prior’s tandem skill as a filmmaker influences an interdisciplinary approach incorporating digital animation and puppetry using light boxes to generate striking visual effects. The balanced integration of all its facets generated a wondrous ever-evolving sensory carnival that I found the evening’s most holistically satisfying. Read more.

Hansel and Gretel Dazzles

With great excitement and anticipation, the Royal New Zealand Ballet kicks off a national season of Hansel and Gretel. Loughlan Prior has been commissioned to create this brand new version of the well-loved fairy tale. It is his first full length ballet and he has risen to the challenge with invention and style. Adding to the anticipation Claire Cowan becomes the first woman to compose a score for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Her music is the star of the night, brilliantly conducted by luminary Hamish McKeich and played with impeccable style by Orchestra Wellington. Read more.

Dance Australia Magazine - "Prior's Reckoning"

One of the featured works in the Queensland Ballet’s forthcoming "Bespoke" season will be a premiere by choreographer Loughlan Prior (pictured right). This rising talent is the resident choreographer of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, so it is a bit of a surprise to discover that though he is an adopted Kiwi, he is originally from Australia. This will be the first time his work has been presented by an Australian company. Read more
